The Dunbar Hill Library Media Center, built in 1995, currently houses more than 8,000 print books, ebooks, and resource materials and is administered by a certified library/media specialist. The vaulted ceiling of natural wood, a skylight, and expanse of windows give the library an open feeling. 

When teaching in the library space, the library teacher uses an interactive touch screen monitor for instruction, as well as each student using Chromebooks. The curriculum includes units on literature, techology skills including safe and ethical use of technology, and research skills. 

The Destiny library catalog is Internet accessible. Students can click to search Destiny and Destiny Discover and put books on hold.
Students in grades K-6 visit the Media Center for weekly lessons and a book exchange. Library/Media is one of four Specials classes -- with Art, Music and PE. 

The library is also available for Open Book Exchange during the first 20 minutes of each school day.

What is the Acceptable Use Policy? (AUP)

When you registered your child for school, you signed an "Acceptable Use Policy" (AUP).  The AUP describes what is expected from every student in terms of behaviors related to technology use. The broad categories of behaviors are divided into four behavioral areas:

  • Respect and protect the privacy of others
  • Respect and protect the integrity, availability, and security of all electronic resources
  • Practice good digital citizenship
  • Use technologies appropriately.

Libraries Inspire!

The Dunbar Hill Library Media Center is a place where independent reading choices and inquiry are encouraged, as well as a resource that supports the curriculum.  Prominently located on the school grounds, it is the focal point for pleasure reading, information seeking, and knowledge building.  Research shows school libraries support student learning and higher academic achievement when staffed by qualified library teachers, and Hamden school media centers are run by certified library/media specialists.  At Dunbar Hill, the library media center is an important part of a student’s education.
